House history: My name is Melissa and this home has been in my family since the 1920s. Originally the property contained only a one room bachelor studio. My great-great uncle Henry added the front four rooms in 1929 using a Sears Kit Home. After his death, my great grandmother Agnes inherited the property. Together with her husband Charlie, they connected the original one room house to the kit home house with the room we now call the dining room. Charlie would also add a screened porch and dig a root cellar deep into the hill behind the house.
The old black and white photo depicts my dad at age 7 standing in front of his grandparents house. In 1953, Agnes sold the house after her husband’s death. From 1953 to 1999, the house would only change hands twice. For most of those years, the house was a rental property.
In 1999, I purchased the house which as a child I had affectionately called “Gaga’s House,” and it has been back in my family ever since. In 2018-2019, my husband and I completed some extensive updating to the home and purchased all new furniture, mattresses, and linens in anticipation of making it available as a corporate and vacation rental.
